Double-Deck Motorized Carousel Structure with Integrated Aurora LED System — Large-Scale Retail Activation Installation
1. The Vision
The client — operator of Dongguan's first integrated MALL+Park+District retail destination — delivered a brief for a winter activation that demanded more than décor: a 10-meter-tall, double-deck rotating carousel serving as the hard visual anchor of the entire main pedestrian corridor. The concept layered Nordic aurora lighting, zodiac horse iconography, and a multi-zone experiential streetscape across 6 defined scene nodes — all of which had to coexist within a live commercial environment and operate continuously over a 60-day public run.
2. The Manufacturing Challenge
Challenge 01 — Structural Integrity Under Dynamic LoadA dual-deck cantilevered rotating structure at 10m height generates significant centrifugal and torsional stress during operation. Any mass asymmetry across the upper deck translates directly into resonant vibration — unacceptable in a public retail environment with a zero-incident tolerance. Standard decorative fabrication suppliers lack the engineering capacity to calculate and counteract these dynamic loads.
Challenge 02 — Electromechanical Integration on a Rotating BodyThe aurora LED cascade was specified to run continuously on the rotating structure itself. Routing live power feeds into a revolving frame without slip-ring engineering risks cable entanglement, progressive insulation fatigue, and electrical fault — a critical failure mode in an occupied mall installation.
Challenge 03 — Modular Transport & Mall-Environment AssemblyAt 10m height and full 3D footprint, the structure exceeded standard freight dimensions and indoor craning capacity. The entire assembly had to be engineered for flat-pack sectional breakdown, with each module maintaining dimensional tolerances tight enough that field re-assembly required zero shimming or corrective welding on-site.
3. The AXIS WORKS Solution
- FEA-Verified Space Frame Engineering: The primary structural system was modeled under simulated rotational loading. Upper and lower deck sub-frames were independently verified for torsional stiffness. Dead load distribution was calibrated through precision counterweight positioning — eliminating resonant vibration at all operational RPM ranges.
- Industrial-Grade Slip Ring Integration: A continuous-duty electrical slip ring assembly was engineered into the central drive shaft, enabling uninterrupted 220V power delivery to all LED nodes on the rotating body. Zero cable routing to the exterior frame — eliminating entanglement risk across 60 days of continuous operation.
- CNC-Toleranced Modular Breakdown: The 10m structure was decomposed into 18 numbered sectional modules, each CNC-profiled to ±0.5mm mating tolerance. Pre-shipment full-scale trial assembly was conducted at our facility. On-site installation was completed in 72 hours with no corrective modification required.
- Full Pre-Delivery Commissioning: Drive motor, slip ring, lighting sequencer, and load-bearing joints were all stress-tested under full operational simulation prior to dispatch — guaranteeing day-one performance on-site.
4. Flawless Reality
The completed installation matched the client's 10m profile brief with zero dimensional deviation. The motorized rotation, aurora LED cascade, and six-zone scene sequencing operated continuously for 60 days — zero mechanical downtime, zero electrical fault, zero structural anomaly.
